1986 and previous years are not comparable. Metropolitan Areas (MAs) were redefined by the Office of Management and Budget as of June 30, 1984. These definitions were introduced in January 1986 and differ from those used for earlier HVS estimates for Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs). MAs were redefined again in 1992 and 1993. These definitions were introduced in January 1995.
