Correlates of War

The Correlates of War project seeks to facilitate the collection, dissemination, and use of accurate and reliable quantitative data in international relations.

Key principles of the project include a commitment to standard scientific principles of replication, data reliability, documentation, review, and the transparency of data collection procedures.

More specifically, we are committed to the free public release of data sets to the research community, to release data in a timely manner after data collection is completed, to provide version numbers for data set and replication tracking, to provide appropriate dataset documentation, and to attempt to update, document, and distribute follow-on versions of datasets where possible. We intend to use our website as the center of our data distribution efforts, to serve as central site for collection of possible error information and questions, to provide a forum for interaction with users of Correlates of War data, and as a way for the international relations community to contribute to the continuing development of the project.

Global Integrity Index 2006

  • Global Integrity - Independent Information on Government and Corruption

The Global Integrity Index assesses the existence and effectiveness of anti-corruption mechanisms that promote public integrity. More than 290 discrete Integrity Indicators generate the Integrity Index and are organized into six key categories and twenty three sub-categories. Global Integrity - Independent Information on Government and Corruption

Global Integrity is an independent, non-profit organization tracking governance and corruption trends around the world. Global Integrity uses local teams of researchers and journalists to monitor openness and accountability.

Global Integrity meets the international community’s need for a trustworthy source of unbiased information on corruption and governance trends produced by an entity without partisan, ideological, or financial interests. Among other work, we produce the Global Integrity Report, a collection of original, in-depth national assessments combining journalistic reporting with 292 “Integrity Indicators” analyzing openness, governance, and anti-corruption mechanisms for a diverse collection of countries. Global Integrity aims to provide the public, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and governments with an innovative set of information tools that diagnose, explain and analyze governance trends in a globalized world.

Democracy Promotion Project

Final report from a study conducted in 2005, with data in SPSS format.

This study was made possible by a grant from the Association Liaison Office (ALO) to Vanderbilt University, with subcontracts to the University of Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh. The authors’ views expressed in this publication do not necessarily reflect the views of the United States Agency for International Development or the United States Government.

This study attempts to determine the impact of U.S. democracy assistance on democracy building world-wide. Unlike all prior published research, the data set is based upon an exhaustive survey of the entire democracy portfolio of the United States Agency for International Development. Moreover, we cover the entire post Cold War period, beginning in 1990 and continue up through 2003, the most recent year for which data are available. Prior published quantitative research has been based on data sets that were far more limited, either by restricting the analysis to fewer countries, fewer years and, perhaps most importantly, by not cleanly separating democracy assistance from other forms of assistance.

The World Bank

The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. We are not a bank in the common sense. We are made up of two unique development institutions owned by 185 member countries—the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA).

Each institution plays a different but supportive role in our mission of global poverty reduction and the improvement of living standards. The IBRD focuses on middle income and creditworthy poor countries, while IDA focuses on the poorest countries in the world. Together we provide low-interest loans, interest-free credit and grants to developing countries for education, health, infrastructure, communications and many other purposes.

Governance & Anti-Corruption

  • The World Bank

The World Bank views good governance and anti-corruption as central to its poverty alleviation mission. Nowadays, hundreds of governance and anti-corruption activities are taking place throughout the World Bank Group. They focus on internal organizational integrity, minimizing corruption on World Bank-funded projects, and assisting countries in improving governance and controlling corruption.

Combining participatory action-oriented learning, capacity-building tools, and the power of data, the World Bank Institute (WBI), in collaboration with many units in the World Bank Group, supports countries in improving governance and controlling corruption. Using a strategic and multidisciplinary approach, we apply action-learning methods to link empirical diagnostic surveys, their practical application, collective action, and prevention. Concrete results on the ground are emphasized in our learning programs as well as the periodic release of the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI). This integrated approach is supported by operational research and a comprehensive governance databank.
